Sara Gebran

A Feminine Warrior

Sara Gebran, Venezuelan/Danish/Lebanese choreographer, performer. Born 1964 in Venezuela, resident in Denmark since 1996. Graduated in 1992 as a dancer from the Instituto Superior de Danza, Caracas, and began working as a choreographer in 1993.  She is the artistic director of the company Public Eye.

Artist Profile
Sara Gebran’s work is performance art – a melting pot of dance, gestural expressions and sounds, combined with a rawness and an unpolished edge, full of explosive energy. Gebran’s works are loaded with social and political subjects, mixing seriousness with satire and sarcasm. She introduces provocative thoughts to the spectators, provokes them and contradicts them in constant challenging interaction with the spectator, indirectly as well as directly. Gebran explores movement in relation to sound and space, taking off in the dancer’s individual expressions and their physicality. She builds up her work out off fragmented scenes, movements and rhythms, resulting in “…a different way of choreographing carried through with femininity and raw-power”. – Weekend Avisen (DK). She has been described as “…a post-modern, psycho-Pina spin on American TV’s Charlie’s Angels”. She received the international price of the Bergnolet/Scandinavian Platform with She Shrinks in 1999. She is now touring in Europe and the Middle East. She currently teaches professional dancers and dance students in Denmark and abroad.

Current Productions

Il n'y as pas de pommes au paradis

(2006)
Based on components from Waiting for Godot, The Anticrist, El Desbarrancadero of Fernando Vallejos, and a number of religious rituals, assembled in an irrational pattern. The idea of paradise, as described to us by different power structures, rules and norms, is examined, as well as the possibility of breaking from it.
Language: Spanish and English. Could be done in Arab and French.

Review Extracts
“The volcanic Venezuelan Sara Gebran with sharp humour…”
Le Figaro (FR), Frontiers, June 2004

“An invitation to close combat – just bring it on…  Gebran plays with political and personal boundaries … Gebran’s strength is that she can be amazingly audacious with the sweetest smile. ... This sort of political dimension is much needed in the dance milieu’s otherwise so silent public, ‘lost in abstraction.’”
Politiken (DK), Frontiers, April 2004

"...Gebran, whom the gentlemen Buñuel and Dalí might have found amusing if they had met, is reminiscent of a bizarre Beckett-figure [...] a clown of multiculturalism [...] She confronts the audience with an otherness that opens for reflection. In some ways the aesthetic resemble the "beauty warriors" solos created by Jan Fabre for strong women, but Gebran is less sophisticated, more politically direct and feministic. The performance creates an appetite for more. A woman who makes apple-sauce out of cultural codes and the concept of gender is woth exploring."
Svenska Dagbladet (SE), Il n'y as pas de pommes au paradis, March 2006

Kitt Johnson - Presentation

Kitt Johnson is a loner. Through her wide-ranging work with the language of choreography, a unique sense for space and stage effects plus her sublime body control, she has created a personal expression and sureness of style. This has placed her as one of the most respected Danish choreographers. Both in Denmark and internationally there is great interest for her distinctive artistic universe.

Kitt Johnson is known as a major solo performer, although her work covers a wider spectrum. She has worked extensively with site-specific projects throughout Europe and, in recent years, has created a series of ensemble works, which have challenged her artistic vision.

Kitt Johnson is artistic director of the company X-act. Since 1992 she has, with X-act, worked with the Swedish composer and musician Sture Ericson. Since 1997 other artists have been connected to the group, among these the light designer Mogens Kjempff and costume designer Charlotte Østergaard - both Danes - and the Greek born visual artist, performer and writer, Theofanis K. Melàs.

Background

Kitt Johnson was born in 1959. After 12 years of practicing elite sports, and a bachelor's degree in Sports from the University of Odense, she started dancing as a 24 year old. She took part in numerous workshops in Denmark as well as abroad within the fields of modern, new dance, contact improvisation, martial arts, German expressionistic theatre and butoh.

As a dancer, performer and choreographer Kitt Johnson has worked with Mark Tompkins (F), Nobert Stockheim (D), Sacha Waltz (D), Anita Saij (DK) and Yumiko Yoshioka (D) among others.

Kitt Johnson's North American debut with "Stigma" at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in July marked a successful week of the reintroduction of an old "Pillow" tradition: The mixed programme (together with Vincent Mantsoe). The welcome of the Pillow community as well as the public and the press contributed to an overwhelming experience.

At Summerdance in Santa Barbara Ari and Hagit Rosenzweig felt no less welcome. The stage was set for an inspiring and productive week with several performances and culminated with the presentation of a new work called "Grejs". "Grejs" was also performed and received with enthusiasm at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles together with Rosenzeig's other works "Jerry", "Jingele o Maidele" and "Aetyde".

Welcome

A warm welcome is extended to Sara Gebran, whose company Public Eye is now participating in the dance diffusion initiative. Sara's present tour repertory consists of the highly acclaimed performance "Butcher's House". "Butcher's House" is a journey through storytelling, mixing reality and fiction, humor and sarcasm, sadness and happiness, gender identities and sexual orientation, cultural diversity and stereotypes.

Also available for touring is "Cross Me". This short piece (a political dance piece that uses humor to criticize the Middle East war invasion and portrays our reaction to the post war situation, through our guilty, lazy charity support of the Red Cross) is the first of four pieces being created this winter. The pieces can either be included in mixed programmes or put together for a full evening.
